a while ago, it did my best of buffett picks. since then i’ve added a handful of cds to the always growing jimmy buffett collection. the latest being live in anguilla. well, like so many stars that have their celebrity playlists up on itunes now, i thought i’d give you my internet celebrity playlist. although i am far from it… i have around 60 buffett cds now, and about fifty live concerts. i’ve also had numerous request for my favorite buffett songs, though that list is even larger, i thought this might suffice.
1. i can’t be your hero today ~ down to earth (1970) this song, like the album is so far from the jimmy buffett that the world knows. it reminds me a lot of a john denver song.
2. high cumberland jubilee ~ high cumberland jubilee (1971) i’ve said it before, but with a name like high cumberland jubilee you would think this song sounded like something from deliverance. it doesn’t, not at all. it has a seventies feel to it, a grateful dead sprinkled with the beatles if you will.
3. i have found me a home ~ white sport coat and a pink crustacean (1973) white sport coat was buffett’s first “island” album and you can hear the drastic change. the song is a light ballad dedicated to buffett’s then new home in key west.
4. trying to reason with the hurricane season ~ a1a (1974) one of jimmy’s signature songs. even though the song is talking about hurricanes, it really makes me just sit back and relax.
5. the wino and i know ~ living and dying in 3/4 time (1974) i love this song. it is so fun. it’s a fun song to play when i’m just sitting around with my twelve string. it’s also the songs that got me turned on to cafe du monde’ coffee and beinets.
6. livingston saturday night ~ rancho deluxe soundtrack (1975) you can’t not love this rocking song. this is a chicken wire bar band song. period.
7. havana daydreamin’ ~ havana daydreamin’ (1976) this is one off buffett’s best story telling songs. when i listen to this song i just close my eyes and drift away to the heyday of havana, before trade imbargos…
8. banana republics ~ changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes (1977) the first of many steve goodman songs covered by jimmy. goodman was a hell of a song writer. i’d pay a million dollars to have half his talent. i’d pay even more to have had the chance to see these two play together.
9. coast of marseilles ~ son of a son of a sailor (1978) hands down one of the best songs in buffett’s catalog. the songs was written by buffett’s one time band mate keith sykes.
10. wonder why we ever go home ~ you had to be there (1978) this is the best live version of this song. period. it’s slower than the original and i love the mix of the harmonica and the crying guitar solo.
11. morris’ nightmare ~ you had to be there (1978) you’ll only find this song here on this album. it is one of the few buffett songs not featured on more than one album.
12. treat her like a lady ~ volcano (1979) there has never been a better song about saving the environment.
13. the weather is here, wish you were beautiful ~ coconut telegraph (1980) sometimes you need a few drinks and an airplane to take you away from the hustle and bustle of life.
14. somewhere over china ~ somewhere over china (1981) note; china is not a caribbean island. but this is a cruise ship lounge act if ever i’ve heard one.
15. twelve volt man ~ one particular harbour (1983) the story goes that there was a man who lived in the baja region of mexico who would hook up his waring blender and his record player to an old honda generator and sears die-hard battery and he’d make margaritas and listen to buffett until the generator ran out of gas.
16. she’s going out of my mind ~ riddles in the sand (1984) a slow ballad about not only losing the one you love, but losing your mind in the process.
17. frank and lola ~ last mango in paris (1985) that couple from before must of worked it out because they’re rolling around on the beaches now. my dog is named after this song.
18. pencil thin mustache ~ songs you know by heart (1985) this track was originally included on 1974’s living and dying in 3/4 time. it is a fun upbeat song with throwbacks to a forgotten era.
19. no plane on sunday ~ floridays (1986) the whole album is great but no plane on sunday sticks out. i’d love to be stranded on a deserted island. really.
20. prince of tides ~ hot water (1988) the late 80’s were a disater, prince of tides was one good thing to come out of it. neon pink was not.
21. changing channels ~ off to see the lizard (1989) an awesome song that i love singing to my little lily.
22. one particular harbour ~ feeding frenzy (1990) i love this song because of the way it takes you to that harbour, and if you’re wondering the opening and closing lyrics are tahitian.
23. take it back ~ boats, beaches, bars and ballads (1992) a song jimmy wrote for the “stars and stripes challenge” boating race. this song has never appeared on any of buffett’s studio or live albums, as it has only been played live stateside once. (1997 nobelsville, in)
24. when the coast is clear ~ boats, beaches, bars and ballads (1992) a wonderful track about what ——- (insert tourist trap here) is like when the snow birds go home.
25. domino college ~ boats, beaches, bars and ballads (1992) a fun, upbeat song about getting your “education” in the tropics. the song was written by buffett and the late dan fogelberg.
26. everlasting moon ~ boats, beaches, bars and ballads (1992) another track that has never been featured on any other buffett album. a great song about saving the environment.
27. before the beach (1993) i’ll skip this album only because it is a re-release of buffett’s first two studio albums.
28. uncle john’s band ~ fruitcakes (1994) the first of many dead covers by buffett. i love this version.
29. remittance man ~ barometer soup (1995) a sad story, but a great ballad.
30. bob robert’s society band ~ banana wind (1996) a fun upbeat song that incorporates nearly every square inch of florida.
31. merry christmas alabama (never far from home) ~ christmas island (1996) what can i say other than it’s a nice little christmas song dedicated to jimmy’s home state of alabama.
32. island fever ~ don’t stop the carnival (1998) buffett’s was commisioned by novelist herman wouk to write the music for the musical don’t stop the carnival, which is based on wouk’s book by the same name. island fever is one of the best tracks on the album.
33. american storyteller (1999) another (of the many) compilations of buffett’s first two albums.
34. pacing the cage ~ beach house on the moon (1999) a bruce cockburn cover that jimmy covers wonderfully.
35. cairo ~ calaloo (1999) the album was a five song compilation released by best buy, the song can only be found on one other compilation margaritaville cafe: late night live.
36. southern cross ~ buffett live: tuesdays, thursdays and saturdays (1999) a cover of a steven stills song, southern cross has quickly become a buffett concert favorite.
37. best of the early years (2002) another (of the many) compilations of buffett’s first two albums.
38. savannah fare you well ~ far side of the world (2002) a wonderfully written ballad about how hard change can be.
39. migration ~ meet me in margaritaville (2003) another great track about what the snow birds can do to ruin a perfectly good piece of sand.
40. take another road ~ meet me in margaritaville (2003) a low key track about choosing a different path in life.
41. i don’t know (spicoli’s theme) ~ live in las vegas (2003) not many people know that buffett penned spicoli’s theme for the film fast times at ridgemont high. a great song on an otherwise slow live album.
42. i still miss someone ~ live in auburn, wa (2003) it’s a fitting tribute to the man in black.
43. mexico ~ live in mansfield, ma (2004) we’ve covered goodman, stills, loggins, fogelberg, cockburn, the grateful dead and cash. why leave out taylor?
44. tampico trauma ~ live in cincinnati (2004) one of the best live concert recordings featuring one of the funnest tracks out there.
45. trip around the sun ~ license to chill (2004) if there would be one to summarize my 2007, it would have to be this one. i love martina mcbride’s vocals on this track.
46. back to the island ~ live from hawaii (2005) why not throw a leon russell cover into the mix. buffett’s live version is the best i’ve heard. (i’ve never seen leon russell live so there’s no contest there)
47. why don’t we get drunk/sweet caroline ~ live at fenway park (2005) never before have i heard two so opposite songs so seamlessly combined. neil diamond would roll in his grave, if he was dead.
48. floridays ~ hoot official movie soundtrack (2006) the original was a good song, the 2006 reggae version is 100 times better. it makes me want to head south.
49. breathe in, breathe out, move on ~ take the weather with you (2006) an amazing dedication to the city that gave buffett his start, new orleans.
50. city of new orleans ~ live at wrigley field (2006) buffett brings it full circle with his cover of the steve goodman written song. it’s an awesome track played acoustically in the nosebleed seats of wrigley.
51. northeast texas woman ~ live at texas stadium (2007) it was rumored buffett had recorded this song years ago but nothing had ever come of it. finally here it is.
52. chanson pour les petits enfants ~ live in anguilla (2007) fitting that buffett would come back to the island that inspired this song to finally record it live.
that’s it for now…

Good to see your post about “Banana Republics” by Steve Goodman. He often doesn’t get his due. You might be interested in my new 800-page biography, “Steve Goodman: Facing the Music.” The book delves deeply into the genesis of “Banana Republics” and Goodman’s relationship with Jimmy Buffett, who was a key source among my 1,000-plus interviewees.
“It sounded like a song that I should have written,” Buffett told me and is quoted as such in the book. “It’s a great story. It paints a real accurate vision of expatriates. For people that know them and for people that don’t, it’s a very vivid image. It still is, too. When you get into the most requested songs, favorites of mine or in my performances, ‘Banana Republics’ has got to be one of them.”
The book also has black-and-white and color photos of Goodman and Buffett together.
Please know that the book’s first printing just sold out, all 5,000 copies and the publisher has authorized a second printing that probably will be out in late February. To sign up to be notified about the availability of the second printing, visit my Internet site (below) and click on the “online store” page. Just trying to spread word about the book. Feel free to do the same!

Please excuse the added message, but perhaps needless to say, “City of New Orleans” is a huge focus of the book as well.
